Samuels embarked on a starry-eyed journey, driven by the ardent belief that even in today’s over-mechanized, industrialized, commoditized, and digitized world, the unique and exotic might still be found. He traversed the globe, immersing himself in foreign cultures and sampling local libations. From tepache de piña in Jalisco to matcha in Japan, he recorded a wide range of noteworthy beverages in his journals. But it wasn’t until arriving in a small village on the Caspian sea that he encountered sekanjabin, a tonic dating back to medieval times, and was truly smitten. Again, he set off on a journey, this time experimenting with flavors and ingredients to revive long-forgotten recipes. Today, G.B. Samuel’s handcrafted elixirs capture a sense of place and the emotions associated with its discovery.
