From tepache de piña in Jalisco to matcha in Japan, he recorded a wide range of noteworthy beverages in his journals. But it wasn’t until arriving in a small village on the Caspian sea that he encountered sekanjabin, a tonic dating back to medieval times, and was truly smitten. Again, he set off on a journey, this time experimenting with flavors and ingredients to revive long-forgotten recipes. Today, G.B. Samuel’s handcrafted elixirs capture a sense of place and the emotions associated with its discovery.
